Dreamy, spaced, reverby shoegaze.... luscious textures, vocals that drift along in the washes of sound... yet simmering beneath it all is a tension, a bass with just enough overdrive to give it a crunch, ragged edge. The ingredients that combine to create the album that is ‘ At the Down-turned Jagged Rim of the Sky’ are all perfectly balanced, and in combination render down to a wash of sounds without ever becoming washed-out.
‘If You Say It’ introduces a dark electro edge to the musical spectrum. With its minimal percussion and slow droning backdrop, it’s cold and stark and builds to a swell before fading out... Meanwhile, the subtly soaring ‘This is Real’ has a rich, almost choral feel... a dolorous sludgy drone and a snare that sounds like the crack of a whip creates a sonic dungeon on the dark lullaby ‘Goodnight’, while elsewhere firefly flickers fade into the darkness in a sedate mist of etherality, an almost conventional jangly indie guitar tune transformed by a soft-focus production and Jessica’s serene vocals. The sum is most definitely greater than the parts, although it’s often hard to discern what the parts are exactly in the slow-filtered sonic haze – and that’s precisely why ‘At the Down-turned Jagged Rim of the Sky’ is such a magnificent album.
