Review: 'Laura Comfort'
'Don't Ignore Me'

-  Genre: 'Pop' -  Release Date: '12/02/13'

Our Rating:
Listening to this album I was struck by the versatility of singer-songwriter Laura Comfort. Expecting a straight acoustic-pop record, upon hearing album opener 'Angelina Jolie' I realised that 'Don't Ignore Me' was going to be much more. With what is Comfort's third album, it seems she has perfected her art and showcased her musical talents excellently.

The 12 tracks on the album take the listener on a real journey, perhaps transmitting Comfort's recent life experiences. The aforementioned song 'Angelina Jolie' is a thumping, catchy pop song that perfectly opens the record. Vocally Comfort's voice almost sounds like Karen O near the beginning before the infectious chorus takes hold. 'Cherry Lips' takes the tempo down with some deftly picked electric guitar, synthesisers and Comfort's vocals floating neatly on top. Heading into lead single 'Because of You', the tone is markedly changed. The emotive piano chords and Comfort's delicate vocals signal this as a moving ballad. 'It Hurts' is a similarly touching piece, which sees acoustic guitar, piano and strings neatly intertwining. Achieving an uplifting mood, Comfort's songwriting skills are clear in these songs.

In other parts of the album, the mood on 'Don't Ignore Me' accentuates Comfort's pop/rock disposition. 'Come Take A Ride' for instance, is a guitar driven song where Comfort's vocals take on a sultry form. 'I'm No Barbie' is another up-tempo track which electric guitar plays a central role. Comparisons with Kelly Clarkson and Avril Lavigne are evoked in these cases.

Writing some of her strongest material yet, Laura Comfort has produced an exceptional album in 'Don't Ignore Me'. Set for release in February next year, Comfort is a name to watch for the future.
