On the cover, Will’s smoking a fag and looking serious. It says he’s deep, he’s intense, a bit of a rebel, something of a troubadour. C’mon, really? Does anyone really still think that leaning against a white-painted door or wall smoking a fag looking aloof yet quietly intense is remotely cool or makes any kind of statement beyond ‘zero imagination’ and ‘cliché’?
Maybe I’m being a bit hard on the guy. After all, ‘Shallow water’ ain’t bad. It’s folky in a Led Zep kind of a way, with some country licks. But nah, fuck it. I’m not buying this contrived ‘serious artist’ posturing. Besides, ‘Angela’ is nothing more than typical singer-songwriter fare. Soulful, sincere, pedestrian and uninspiring. There’s nothing wrong with Miles’ music, but there’s nothing about it to distinguish him from countless others.
