Review: 'Delgado, Rebekah'
'Ménage À Moi EP'

-  Genre: 'Pop'

Our Rating:
It’s a small world. Back in school, we had an IT tech, who had a band. I was also in a band, but this guy had a 4-track and we didn’t, so got him to produce our demo tape. Both bands fizzled out, but this feller resurfaced in London a few years later with a band called Ciccone who built a cult following around London and got a bit of BBC airplay before they fizzled out. I wasn’t too distraught: the CD I picked up in my local record store (remember those?) wasn’t up to much. Anyway, one of Ciccone’s former members happens to be Rebekah Delgado.

This EP comes as a taster for her full-length debut due at the end of January, and indicates in no uncertain terms that her solo stuff sounds nothing like the tinny punked-up indie of her former band. The lead track is a tense and breathy burst of theatrical pop, and it’s definitely the standout number: ‘Sunrise’ may be shimmery, dreamy indie but really fails to ignite and the grouchy cabaret of ‘Scoundrelle’ is ok and sees Delgado assume a more menacing persona but it’s all been done before. The ‘Comme Ca’ version of ‘Ménage À Moi’, with its disco beats and autotune is comme ci, comme ça at best, and while there’s no doubt an audience for Miss Delgado, there’s not a lot to get excited about here.
