In many ways, Humanfly epitomise the Leeds scene. Eclectic, off the wall, mathy, but ultimately genre-defying and favouring noise – big guitar noise. If Battles collaborated with Biffy Clyro, the resultant sound would perhaps be something like ‘Awesome Science’. But that’s still only half the story when there’s an off-kilter reggae slant to ‘Poetry of Light’, and ideas and musical sections shooting off in myriad tangential directions.
The 14-minute ‘The Armour of Science’ punches in with a megalithic riff that’s heavy enough to break walls, balls and atoms. But over its course it twists and turns and metamorphosises, through space-jazz to uber-prog. The album’s final track, ‘Frozen in Time, Billions of Light Years Away’ really drives it home with some mega balls-out riff-mongering. Far from simple, but definitely effective.
