Apparently YURI LUGOVSKOY is a minimalist electronic music composer from the heartland of the Ukraine.
The publicity blurb states that “Internet searches revealing nothing but a blurred photograph of a cowled, bearded figure” The most probable reason that I can suggest for such a desire for anonymity, is due to the fact that if he were more widely recognised, anyone who had been subjected to his ‘music’ would wish him great harm.
This is a double album featuring different slightly varying electronic tones, that supposedly pass as mood music. Well, it certainly put me in a mood. At first I thought this must be a bit of a piss take, but by the third track I was realising that this is a ‘Metal Machine Music’ for the twenty first century, the only difference being that in forty years time it will not be remembered as fondly.
It’s not that I have any dislike for electronic music (at least I didn’t until now), and I don’t mind instrumental tracks, but this is the aural equivalent of watching paint dry. As I worked through each track (none are titled, they only are listed as “Track One” etc) my finger was constantly hovering above the skip button, however, in a perverse attempt at reviewing machismo, I did sit through each one, willing it silently to end.

The second album of the two CD set features ‘interpretations’ of the tracks on the first CD by other parties such as Mugwood, and William Ryan Fritch, as well as remixes.
Thankfully, the publicity mailshot informs me that this CD is “Limited to 300 copies in a double gatefold digipak CD.” I guess what that really means is that they’ve still got 299 copies sitting in a warehouse somewhere. Avoid unless you are a masochist.
