Review: 'Pioulard, Benoît'
'Hymnal'

-  Album: 'Hymnal' -  Label: 'Kranky'
-  Genre: 'Indie' -  Release Date: '4th March 2013'

Our Rating:
Shimmering textures and washes of sound provide the backdrop to the songs on ‘Hymnal’. ‘Mercy’ is grainy and rippling, and there’s a distant quality to the dreamy drift of ‘Hawkeye’: not to much sharp-focus as rather decidedly blurred at the edges, the album’s evocative atmosphere shifts and fades like a sepiatone photo in its crackling analogue shoegazing folk.

There are fleeting glimpses of religious iconography through doors left ajar, and there’s an ethereal feel to the delivery. Laced with tinges of melancholic nostalgia, tingling ambient passages flow in and out and interlink the guitar-based parts, floating like a psychedelically-tinted cloud from the serpentine ‘Reliquery’ to toward the concluding ‘Foxtail’.
