Our Rating:
Tim Simenon of Bomb the Bass fame may never have really gone away, but he’s certainly not been maintaining a high profile in recent years. After devoting most of his time to production work, he returns to the role of creator and artist in his own right with Ghost Capsules, featuring the vocal talents of Laura Gomez.

Gomez has a bit of Kate Bush about her vocals, which are pitched against a steady, throbbing electro beat on ‘Inside’.

Reaffirming the point I made in my recent review of the new album by Naked Lunch about the influence of William S. Burroughs in music, there’s a ‘Third Mind’ remix of ‘Inside’ to be found after the radio edit and album version, and it is quite radically different.

However, by midway through the 12 and a half minute Makossa & Megablast Remake of ‘Inside’, I’m flagging, and there’s still the Lupo remix to come. Thankfully, it’s stripped back, sparse, dark and haunting, and for my money, the pick of the bunch.

‘Sleepless’ continues this trajectory, dark undercurrents eddying amidst the dense, bass-soaked atmosphere. There are two additional remixes that are ok as of and in themselves, but the Komaton Remix is rather unfortunately named, dragging on for a coma-inducing 8 minutes and bringing the EP to a rather dreary and underwhelming conclusion.

Still, the two original tracks here suggest Simenon could well be onto something – again – with Ghost Capsules.
