Our Rating:
Seven years on from his first release, Dag Rosenqvist is calling it a day for Jasper TX. The title would suggest a work that’s dark and lugubrious, and while ‘An Index of Failure’ is dark, it’s also a thing of beauty. It’s also a magnificently crafted, carefully engineered and intricately textured work that combines conventional acoustic instrumentation – notably piano, and also minimalist, plucked acoustic guitar – with the electronic drones. There’s space and silence between the notes that allows the air to circulate and the subtle sonic interplay to resonate as simple motifs become encircled and enveloped by broader waves of sound.

The depth of tonality is perfectly suited to a vinyl-only release, and it’s clear that Rosenqvist has gone to painstaking lengths to balance the moods and atmospheres that these five seamlessly segued sonic vistas conjure. Jasper TX may be signing off, but this final document is anything but a failure.
